What is Team Coaching?

Team coaching is a form of simultaneous coaching delivered to the entire team, designed to help them develop into a high-performing team.

All team members, including the team leader/manager, are present. The coaching is goal-oriented and team-driven, with starting points ranging from the team's objectives, collaboration with stakeholders, internal communication, handling challenging situations, and more. Coaching brings issues to light, and coaches do not provide the answers—the solutions are found within the team itself.

When Should You Hire a Team Coach?

The truth is, it’s always a good time for coaching if a team wants to improve its performance. Even top athletes engage in coaching to become even better. However, there are situations where team coaching is especially beneficial:

  • You want to improve the team's working methods, or there have been changes in operational practices.

  • You want to enhance working together and increase collective efficiency.

  • There is a persistent issue of unspoken conflicts or a lack of open communication within the team.

  • You want to improve how the team handles and resolves conflicts.

  • The team has new members, or members have recently departed.

  • The team is completely new and needs a strong start.

  • The team has been working together for a long time and needs a fresh approach or renewed energy.

  • The team is experiencing fatigue, a lack of enthusiasm, or low morale.

  • The team is not working cohesively toward common goals.

  • The team is unable to find independent solutions to issues arising in their work.

The Team Coaching Process

A typical team coaching process includes a first meeting, the team coaching sessions themselves (3 or more sessions), and a final review meeting.

1. First Meeting (Kick-off)

The entire process begins with a discussion about the team’s current state and their desired future state—what the team aims to achieve through coaching. Participants in this meeting include the team leader/manager, the team coach(es), and the party commissioning the coaching (e.g., an HR representative). This meeting can be conducted virtually or in person.

2. Coaching Sessions

The actual team coaching sessions are, whenever possible, conducted in person, with all team members and the team leader/manager present. Each coaching session typically lasts three hours and is held, for example, every 2–4 weeks for a total of three sessions (or more, if a longer process has been agreed upon). The team is assigned tasks to complete between the coaching sessions.

3. Final Review Meeting

The team coaching process concludes with a final meeting, which includes the team leader/manager, the team coach(es), and the party commissioning the coaching. During this meeting, the coaching process is reviewed, the progress made by the team is discussed, and a feedback session is conducted.
